5 Stars (June 2015)
Soul Man by Ronald Paxton The Shenandoah Mountain Lake community is a picturesque area with much to offer both locals and tourists alike. But like most rural tourist communities, they’ve had a tough time climbing out of the recession and with the “off” season approaching quickly, it’s all the more important to protect their image as a safe place to visit all year long. Salem Matthews is a local businessman who owns two stores and a campground; he’s also ex-military and acutely tuned into the community and its issues. When a serial killer plagues the community, Salem and his best friend, Anderson (also ex-military) are more than concerned; the local sheriff is untrained and unwilling to treat the situation seriously. To make matters worse, one of the victims is a friend and Salem, Anderson and a few other friends jump into action in an attempt to find out who the killer is. Paxton is a master at scenery description and leaves the reader feeling as if they’re actually there. His characters are well developed and interesting and this novel is well paced and keeps the reader turning the pages. This is the second book in the Salem Matthews series (I haven’t read the first, but this book works very well as a stand-alone. The first book is Deep Water and I look forward to picking it up in the future). This book was provided to me for free for an honest and unbiased review (see all our reviews at Goodreads) Review by Margaret Millmore
