Review: Although this is a work of fiction, the author has done an amazing job in her research and portrayal of one the most horrific episodes of South African (and human) history. The author takes us through the journey of two specific women, one white, one black and their struggles to end apartheid and the suffering and death it created, but also the deep and loving friendship that developed between them.
The only reason I gave this 4 stars was due to a variety of typographical and editing errors that appeared about half-way through the book and continued through the end (although they don’t distract too much from the story, so please don’t be deterred). However this is such a powerful and moving story that I couldn’t put it down and it’s left a haunting impression on me that will stay with me for quite some time. If you’re interested in historical fiction, this is the book for you. But beware, this book is not for the faint of heart, the horrors depicted are graphic and atrocious, but more importantly, historically correct and that is the true horror.

But the story dies when Lorna Thomas, the kiss in his kiss-and-tell, kills herself on a quiet country road.Unable to accept her twin’s suicide, Laurie Thomas follows in her sister’s footsteps to London and to the heart of government. Lorna’s twin sister, Laura, is convinced that Loran would never commit suicide and seeks out the help of a powerful man to find the truth.  This is a well written novel with great character development and vibrant scenes. Although I was expecting a thriller/suspense story, this was more of an emotional roller coaster that delves into love, loss and grief from two completely different character view points, which keeps the story interesting and difficult to put down.  Ms. Jones does a fantastic job of weaving a mystery into this deeply emotional tale. A great read.

First of all I'd like to mention that this cover is beautiful. I could just stare at it all day long. Kudos to the artist.

When I started reading the book I couldn't put it down. The author hooks you from the first page with Gemma's humor and quirkiness. She's invisible at school, mainly because Gemma grew up with the ability of not being able to feel anything; sadness, anger and even love. It didn't take long for her emotions to suddenly burst out from inside her, and neither Gemma or the people around her can understand why. Then enter Alex, a boy that gave new meaning to the word "lie." He's been sent to protect her, but can she trust him? Gemma is soon running for her life which thrusts her into a world of supernatural. The story is fun and creative, but after a few chapters I noticed that Gemma ALWAYS repeats everything said to her.

Example (not written word for word):
"You have a star inside you."
Gemma: "I have a star inside me?"

"I'm a vampire."
Gemma: "You're a vampire?"

It goes on like that throughout the novel. It might just be a personal thing. Other readers might not mind it. I still think it was an okay story though.
